Illegal Goldmine in Cofan Bermejo Ecological Reserve

Open pits from active illegal gold mining by outsiders on the Bermeja River, in the Cofan Bermejo Ecological Reserve of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Illegal goldmines are an enormous problem in the Amazon basin and here in the homelands of the Cofan. The Cofan created the Ecological Reserve in the 1990s, and have stewarded it well, with no deforestation inside its borders except for these mining operations primarily funded by drug money from across the border in Columbia.
