Left: Cormorants nest high up in the cliff faces of these basalt columns at Herald Island, Russia. The nesting bird colonies here are immense, safe from predators that would be prowling on the mainland.

Right: A polar bear rests at the high-tide line under nesting kittiwakes. During this time of year, the bears generally do not eat, but they also won't pass up opportunistic snacks such as seabird nests they can reach.
